Digital Media Lab

The Digital Media Lab (DML) is a consortium between Film & Media and the Departments of Art Practice and Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS). It proudly functions as a model of interdepartmental initiatives to support curricular development and digital media on campus.

Lab and Equipment Use

Access to these spaces is reserved for students enrolled in media production classes. You must be enrolled in a media production course to have equipment check out access.

Production Courses in the Film & Media Department

Production courses are offered on an application and interview basis, primarily for juniors and seniors. The production class application process happens separately from general enrollment and has limited available seating.

Filming on Campus

Student filmmakers of UC Berkeley are permitted to use outdoor, public areas of UC Berkeley to produce their films so long as they do not block any pathways, stairways or doors and do not restrict access to any areas where they are filming. Student filmmakers should always endeavor to be respectful of other people on campus and honor any request from the public, Staff, Faculty or fellow students to avoid appearing on camera. Students must abide by all of the Parking and Transportation rules regarding vehicle use on campus.

Filmmakers must request (and be granted) access to any indoor space within UC Berkeley before shooting. Access must be granted ahead of filming. Many spaces on campus will require a fee for use. To film in any of the libraries on campus, please visit the Library website to submit your request.

Note that this information is directed towards student filmmakers at UC Berkeley.  All commercial/non-profit groups who want to shoot on campus should write to the Berkeley Campus Filming Program for more information.
