An extension of the exhibition Scores for a Room: David Haxton and Jim Melchert on view at the Worth Ryder Art Gallery, September 17 – October 17, 2014, this his public program features short film and video work by four UC Berkeley alums associated with Bay Area conceptual art and performance in the 1970s. Inspired by Eadweard Muybridge’s motion studies, Jim Melchert’s Untitled (1973) features a series of water splashing attacks and counterattacks in slow motion. Extending out of Stephen Laub’s live performances with slide projection, Spheres (1980) projects an orbit of the solar system on an eyelid. Theresa Hak Kyung Cha appears in a single frame of her structuralist film Permutations (1976), which features her sister as the subject. Mark Thompson’s Immersion (1973-76) explores the spatial qualities of bees in flight as they swarm the artist’s body.
