Media Archeology as Creative Process
Rebecca Baron is known for her probing essay films concerned with the construction of history, with a particular interest in media archeology and the ways different cine/photographic image making materials create meaning and also hold historiographic knowledge. Her films include: How Little We Know of Our Neighbours (2005) about Britain’s Mass Observation Movement in the 1930’s and is a look at the multiple roles cameras have played in public space since the 1880’s; "The Lossless Series” (2008), in which the “materiality” of the digital becomes the source-code for experimental execution; and Detour de Force (2014), a portrait of "thoughtographer" Ted Serios, a Chicago bellhop with a psychic ability to produce hundreds of Polaroid images from his mind.
Rebecca Baron’s work has screened widely at international film festivals and media venues including Documenta 12, New York Film Festival, Anthology Film Archive, Toronto Film Festival, London Film Festival, Harvard Film Archive, Flaherty Film Seminar and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 2010, the Austrian Film Museum presented a retrospective of her work. She is on the film/video faculty at Cal Arts in Los Angeles.
