This course will introduce students to the process, pleasure, and discipline of academic writing, through learning to write about film and other audio-visual media. The course will explore key theoretical approaches to analyzing film and media, considering how we can uncover the hidden (or not-so-hidden) meanings of a given film or media object. We will learn how to evaluate the unique formal and technological features of different media, and how these produce particular effects. Because reading, thinking, and writing are interconnected, we will deepen our skills on all three throughout the semester.
