This course is designed to instruct students on how to read, write, and research college level theoretical texts in the humanities. It will engage with semiotics, the study of signs, in order to present a systematic approach to analysis in the humanities. Students will be asked to engage with dense theoretical texts alongside both mainstream and experimental cinema. Looking at films such as Arrival, and Final Destination 3, we will examine how signs construct narrative and formal meaning. The class will also examine queer, black, and postcolonial (filmic and theoretical) interventions in semiotics with an eye not just to how the authors and filmmakers deploy signs, but how their work disturbs the very systematicity of meaning itself.
