James Cameron recently commented that the film Wonder Woman was a “step backwards” for representations of women, comparing its protagonist unfavorably with his own creation Sarah Connor who “was not a beauty icon. She was strong, she was troubled” and she had “pure grit.” Are pure grit and beauty mutually exclusive?  Happiness and strength?  Are they so for other identity groups as well?

Our course will seek to consider diverse female protagonists from film and television and interrogate the kinds of possibility that exist for complicated representations of women in contemporary media.  We will watch media featuring female protagonists such as selections from the series Fleabag and films like Atomic Blonde as we consider some of the different and complex questions each raises regarding the power of their respective protagonists.
