East Asian Horror: In this course, we will engage with a range of works in East Asian horror cinema (Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan) and explore their power to provoke and disturb, in relation to issues such as spectatorship, the uncanny, and the reconfiguration of gender and sexuality as modes of critique. We will also discuss the manifold ways in which these films articulate the relation between human bodies and media technologies. The aim of the course is to generate a critical understanding of horror cinema, its conventions as well as its inventive potential.
