This semester we will focus on a number of great Soviet silent filmmakers – Eisenstein, Kozintsev and Trauberg, Kuleshov, and Vertov – and follow the evolution of their film style as they made the transition into sound. Readings will examine the stylistic influences of the filmmakers in question, their own approaches to filmmaking, and responses to their films. Taught in English.
Course requirements include five to eight short response papers, one longer paper at the end of the semester, a midterm, and a final exam.
