Film 26, Moving Image Media Production, is an introduction to digital video production. This course provides a basic foundation for digital video production with hands-on instruction in the use of digital cameras, sound recording for video, basic lighting techniques, and digital editing. Emphasis will be on the basic elements of digital filmmaking: composition, light, color, relationships between sound and image, as well as various creative approaches to editing such as dramatic continuity and montage. Post-production topics include working across platforms and the integration of analogue and digital approaches. The class introduces the language and techniques of dramatic filmmaking, while emphasizing a range of creative approaches to filmmaking as a medium for personal expression and experimentation such as the personal essay, activist, poetic and abstract forms, as well as installation and animation.
This course will provide students the technical groundwork for other courses in the program that integrate production elements, and it will serve as a prerequisite for the more advanced courses that focus on specific techniques and aspects of moving image production. The course will consist of lectures/screenings, discussion/critique, visiting artists, and production workshops in which students produce a series of exercises and a final project.
