This production course focuses on nonfiction filmmaking. The course will explore experimental approaches and methods that are pushing the form in new directions. We will explore durational, conceptual, sensory, poetic and speculative aspects of this vibrant and evolving filmmaking form. The class will consider the ways in which aesthetics, ethics and politics shape the formal considerations of these films. Class meetings are organized around screening and analyzing clips, discussions, technical demos, in-class exercises, hands-on work and project critiques. Students will have the opportunity to create two projects that utilize some of the alternative approaches that will be discussed in class. This class is dynamic and rigorous, with many of the assignments and much of the work done outside of the scheduled class hours.
