This course serves as an introduction to narrative cinema, from its 19th-century prehistory to its cultural life in the 1930s. We will consider the rise of early film, the development of cinematic narrative, the development of national cinematic styles in the 1920s, the transition to sound, and studio filmmaking in the 1930s.
