This course offers casual movie-goers and seasoned cinephiles alike an occasion to (re)discover the pleasures of the film medium. Open to students from any department, with any level of experience watching films critically, this course provides an introduction to the history and aesthetics of the cinema, from the silent era to the early 21st century. In lectures and screenings, we will invite students to engage with a variety of directorial styles, genres, and movements. Assignments will aim to cultivate a facility for describing how films are put together and how they do cultural work by representing the psychological and cultural forces that constitute our world.
