This course provides a survey of feminist film theory. Moving from psychoanalytic criticism through interventions from cultural studies and queer theory, we will cover feminist media scholars’ analyses of authorship, genre, spectatorship, and stardom in the cinema. Course materials will work at the intersection of gender, sexuality, race, and class; students will practice and extend these approaches in class discussions and individual and group writing assignments. Student filmmakers will be invited to produce short films as an alternative to mid-semester and final papers.
