This class explores the relationship between video games and art, examining the ways both game makers and artists create game-based artwork through the lens of history, theory, and politics. In doing so we will examine a number of critical questions. Can we consider video games an art form in the same way we do the cinema, painting, or sculpture? What is the role of experimentation in game design, and how has it shaped the history of video games as an aesthetic medium? Do games have to be fun, and how do they challenge our ideas about play, identity, and culture? Together we will explore these questions at the intersection of art and games to understand the broad influence of video games on our contemporary media culture.
