Students explore the art and craft of writing a feature length, narrative screenplay. Each writer pitches three story ideas, chooses one concept to develop into an outline and then completes the first act of the script. The class is part lecture, part writing workshop. There are weekly writing assignments with a focus on rewriting.
Lecture topics include story structure, character development, openings, dialogue, screenplay form/style.
Prerequisites: Consent of instructor required. This class is open to juniors and seniors. Preference is given to Film & Media majors. Interested students should attend the first class session and be prepared to email a writing sample – a creative piece (short story, poem, screenplay, etc.) or an academic essay.
