This course introduces students to ways of thinking about “film” and “media” – including print media, photography, film, and television – as cultural objects that not only carry meaning, but that help create the world in which we live. Students will learn how to approach media texts from a variety of critical frameworks, posing questions of medium specificity, the construction of space and time, the production of spectators and publics, and the creation of ideological effects. The course proceeds chronologically through major works of 20th century media and cultural theory.
