Thur. 9:00am-12:00pm, Dwinelle 226 ///
Film 182 explores the art and craft of developing and writing serialized narrative scripts. In the first half of the course students simulate the creative and collaborative process of a TV writers’ room by working together to develop a spec script based on an existing series. In the second half of the semester each writer creates a portion of a pilot script for an original series. All students will workshop pitches, outlines and scenes in class.
Lecture topics include episodic concept development, analysis of a variety of story structures, “breaking” a story, creating engaging characters, plot blending, arcs for episodes and seasons.
Prerequisites: Film 180 or some screenwriting experience. Consent of instructor required.
This class is open to juniors and seniors. Preference is given to Film & Media majors. Interested students should attend the first class session and be prepared to email a writing sample (5 pages or more of a script).
