Basic Department Commencement FAQs for students*
How long is the ceremony?
The ceremony starts promptly at 2pm and lasts approximately 2 hours.
Is regalia required?
No, regalia is not required. We do suggest wearing business casual attire for the event. Regalia will be available for purchase or rent at the Cal Student Store.
Is there a reception?
Yes!
Will I need a ticket for Commencement? How much are tickets?
Graduating students do not need tickets for themselves. All other guests must have a ticket to enter Zellerbach Auditorium.
Are the graduating students’ names called at the department commencement ceremony?
Yes!
How is the department commencement different from the campus one?
Department commencements are more intimate affairs. All students graduating are called up to the podium to receive their scrolls; this does not happen at the campus-wide commencements. Department programs list every graduate. Post-commencement ceremonies allow graduates to socialize with their families, peers, friends, and faculty.
