On February 26-28, the Department of Film and Media at the University of California, Berkeley will host the Third International Berkeley Conference on Film and Media: Serialities 1915/2015.

This iteration of our biennial Berkeley Film and Media conference departs from the previous focus on silent cinema. Serialities 1915/2015 places in relation two remarkable eras in which national and transnational serial cultures have flourished: the magazine and film serials of the early twentieth century and the television (and beyond) serials of the early twenty first century. We are interested in serialities that manifest in literature, drama, music, architecture, cartoons, film, television and graphic novels and all over the world. Why have they flourished at particular moments? What are the economic, cultural and aesthetic forms of serial production? What kinds of stories and themes do serials afford?

Formal call for papers will go out July 6 and will close October 31.
